About the Internship The AJC offers fall, spring and summer internships. Fall/spring semester internships are part-time, offering local students a chance to earn college credit and/or pay. Summer internships are paid, 10-week programs. The AJC is looking for upper-level college students interested in pursuing a career as a reporter, database specialist or interactive producer. Interns are treated as full-time professional journalists. Internship Requirements Must be a rising junior, senior or graduate student. We also accept applications from those who have graduated within six months of the start of the summer internship. Digital Intern The AJC’s digital interns will work on learning to cultivate and grow audiences through social media, content curation/creation, interactive development and more. Throughout the course of the internship, digital interns will have the opportunity to experiment in a variety of areas depending on their skills and interests. We are looking for two types of interns: Those skilled at writing/producing content and those familiar with interactive web development. Reporter Daily deadline writing and reporting experience preferred. Experience shooting video, taking photos, and using other digital skills also preferred. Must have worked on the campus newspaper or website and/or had previous professional news internship. Data Reporter We’re looking for someone with a strong news sense -- ideally a person who has already worked at one regular reporting internship - who has a deep interest in working with data as the starting point of a story. Programming skills preferred but not required. What’s required, above all else, is a desire to work with data along with the ability to fumble through Excel and learn SQL. Knowledge of statistical packages, such as R, and mapping is a plus. Data Visualization Developer We’re looking for someone who has solid web development and design skills, as well as a knack for making clean, clear, creative interactive graphics. Must have demonstrated experience with HTML, CSS, Javascript and jQuery, and version control (such as git) Experience with drawing libraries like D3.js and mapping libraries like Leaflet or Google Maps API. Major plus: experience with a server-side scripting language such as Ruby or Python, or graphics experience with an eye for great design (or both!) Send us your online portfolio or links to your work, and/or your github username. Multimedia photojournalist Familiarity or experience with premier pro or similar editing software Comfortable shooting video/interviewing & interacting with the public Basic photography/framing skills Video production experience a plus How To Apply Application Materials A short note on why you want to be a journalist and how an internship at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution will help you pursue your goal. Note the specific internship you’re interested in: digital, reporting, data journalism or multimedia. 3 links, pdfs or other samples of your best work Resume References (contact information for 2). Key Dates For summer internships: send applications by October 1. Decisions will be made by December 15. For fall internships: send applications by June 1. Decisions will be made by August 15. Capelouto News Intern J.D. is a senior at Boston University, where he majors in journalism in the College of Communication, with a concentration in statistics. Previously, he worked in the Metro section of The Boston Globe, interned in the news department of the Thomson Reuters Foundation in London and served as Editor-in-Chief of BU’s student newspaper, The Daily Free Press. At the AJC, J.D. wrote for the new Crime and Public Safety team, an endeavor aimed at honing in on topics that affect readers’ daily lives and wellbeing. He wrote a mix of enterprise, spot news and breaking news, which provided a nice balance of short-term and long-term projects. Additionally, he was heavily involved in building a Facebook group for the section, helping with the new Cold Case Files series and creating the AJC’s first-ever Homicide Tracker. At the AJC, Martha worked with both the Local News and Features teams, which allowed her to report on a diverse spectrum of stories ranging from covering Atlanta City Hall to Facebook Live-ing about new restaurants at the Braves’ SunTrust Park. "I’d define my internship by one word: adaptability. If you are willing to take whatever assignment is thrown at you, or volunteer to help on anything you hear another reporter needs help with, you’ll learn more about a newsroom than if you just stayed in your ‘lane.’ Most importantly, you’ll learn what kind of stories you like to do, personally."
